Open Dental Bridge to Second Opinion

With just a one-time setup, you’ll be able to launch Second Opinion for a specific patient directly from their Open Dental chart—no need to open a separate browser or manually search for the patient anymore.

This streamlined workflow is designed to save your team time and reduce clicks during patient care.

How to Set Up the Pearl Button in Open Dental:

 

Note: You must have Security Access on your user in Open Dental to complete these steps. If you do not have the necessary permissions, please ask someone on your team with Security Access to complete the setup for you.

  1. In Open Dental, go to Setup > Program Links

 

2. A new windows will be open, please select the + Add button from the bottom left.

3. Once the program link page opens update these fields to:

  • Description: Pearl

  • Path or file to open:

     

    This field tells Second Opinion what to launch when the integration is triggered from your PMS. There are three options.

    First, get your base URL. Open Second Opinion in a browser and copy the URL from the homepage address bar. It will look like:

     

    https://secondopinion.hellopearl.com/#/v2/ORGID/OID/

    Then choose one of the options below:

    • Open the Second Opinion homepage — use your base URL exactly as you copied it. https://secondopinion.hellopearl.com/#/v2/ORGID/OID/
    • Open a specific patient by name — add /search/patient/[FName]%20[LName] to the end of your base URL. https://secondopinion.hellopearl.com/#/v2/ORGID/OID/search/patient/[FName]%20[LName]
    • Open a specific patient by patient ID — add /search/patient_number/[PatNum] to the end of your base URL. https://secondopinion.hellopearl.com/#/v2/ORGID/OID/search/patient_number/[PatNum]

    A note on [FName], [LName], and [PatNum]: keep the square brackets exactly as shown. These are placeholders your PMS recognizes and automatically fills in with the active patient's information when the link is clicked. Don't replace them with real names or ID numbers yourself.

  • Tab Button Name: Second Opinion

  • Button Settings: Hold CTRL while selecting toolbars to add the button to multiple workstations

 

  • Button Image: You may right-click the icon image below to save and upload it for your button image

 

  1. Click OK to save

  2. The Second Opinion tab will now be available on all workstations.

     

Important: Each user must log out and log back in on their workstation for the new tab to appear.

You will now see the Pearl button in your toolbar and on all workstations if you set up to do so—clicking it will instantly open Second Opinion to the matching patient file.
