Overview

Sugar Bugs is a new enhancement in Second Opinion designed to make pediatric dental visits less intimidating for children. By replacing the traditional clinical caries UI with colorful, kid-friendly sugar bugs, dental staff can explain findings in a way that is engaging and easy for both children and their parents to understand.

This feature supports a positive chair-side experience, strengthens parent trust, and encourages ongoing patient engagement, helping practices achieve higher satisfaction and treatment acceptance in pediatric dentistry.

How It Works

  • Sugar Bugs Toggle: A new toggle labeled Sugar Bugs appears automatically in the top panel (next to the A|B icon) when a mixed dentition image is detected. By default, the toggle is off, showing the standard interface.

  • Activating Sugar Bugs: Turning the toggle on replaces traditional caries indicators with colorful sugar bugs, making it easier to explain findings to children.

  • Pediatric Only: The Sugar Bugs toggle is only available for pediatric bite wings and periapical images. It does not appear for adult images or in regions where regulatory clearance does not permit pediatric caries overlays.

Benefits for Practices and Patients

  • Child-Friendly Education: Instead of clinical terminology like “cavities” or “decay,” staff can say, “You have a few sugar bugs hiding here. Bye-bye!” making explanations fun and approachable.

  • Improved Patient Experience: Creates a calm and engaging environment that helps children feel more comfortable during visits.

  • Enhanced Parent Trust: A positive pediatric experience builds confidence in your practice and encourages long-term relationships.

  • Staff Empowerment: Gives dental staff a flexible tool to turn AI findings into a patient education experience, enhancing communication and satisfaction.

Best Practices

  1. Focus on Engagement: Emphasize the fun, educational aspect of Sugar Bugs to reduce anxiety in pediatric patients.

  2. Use Flexibly: The toggle allows staff to switch between the standard interface and the Sugar Bugs overlay as needed.

  3. Highlight Patient Experience: Position Second Opinion as a tool that supports both clinical accuracy and a human-centered approach to patient care.

Summary

Sugar Bugs is a simple, effective enhancement that makes pediatric caries detection engaging and educational. By incorporating this child-friendly overlay, practices can enhance patient communication, build trust with parents, and create a more positive experience for young patients, helping to drive higher satisfaction and treatment acceptance.
